Small Town Laundry

I am doing an online songwriting course with FutureLearn. It’s a free learning program that you can upgrade to a credit program. My course is provided by Sheffield University.

As part of my learning, I put together a practice song using GarageBand. If you are interested you can find it on my website at this link Small Town Laundry

The lyrics are:

Friday night lights, soiled delight, the spread was 13 to 1

We replaced her name with a word that took the blame and declared the deed as done.

Battered and splattered, as if that mattered, the cycle will repeat when she’s late

Sermon and prayer, yet nobody there, ain’t none of us gonna step up to the plate?

Small town laundry the stain grows and grows

Small town laundry a list everybody knows

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do when it’s time to be true

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do!

We all knew his kind, how they’re inclined, he’s just one more of that brood

He got his label as soon as he was able, when you’re hungry reform school has food

He’s the wrong parent’s child, so we let him run wild, he’s one who won’t rise above

Sermon and prayer, yet nobody there, what you saying about brotherly love?

Small town laundry the stain grows and grows

Small town laundry a list everybody knows

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do when it’s time to be true

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do!

They aren’t like us, so a beatings a must, despite what it says in the law

Bad cop batons, good cop looks on, somehow there’ll be a crime that they saw

Backed in a corner, citizen or foreigner, we’ll goad you into playing our game

Sermon and prayer, yet nobody there, aren’t we so proud to be the same?

Small town laundry the stain grows and grows

Small town laundry a list everybody knows

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do when it’s time to be true

What you gonna do when they come to call out you

What you gonna do!

What you gonna do, etc

I do despair

Once again this week a letter to the editor appeared in the local newspaper bemoaning that we had made all these sacrifices to save a bunch of old and/or sick people who were going to die soon anyways.

8 months after the alarm was first sounded that our health care system was not adequate to take care of the regular cases let alone a deluge of new cases, people seem unable to grasp that the crisis is the inadequate health care system. Maybe it just seems too complex an issue. Maybe it’s because the politicians don’t want to open up that can of worms that they themselves created. Or maybe people don’t want to accept responsibility for their part in creating the crisis.

In the meantime, my wife and I went to a large local park. We were observing proper social distancing measures as I pumped up my kayak. A lady came over to watch and talked to my wife. She told her that her husband had died from Covid-19 complications in the earlier weeks of the pandemic. She said that the only place he went to be around people was the barbershop. Otherwise, they didn’t have have alot of contact with others. I wonder what that letter writer would say to her face about how he probably wasn’t worth saving.

In the meantime, she goes to the park to sit alone by herself sitting in his favourite folding chair.

Yes but is it helpful?

A helpful thought is one that makes you feel energized, hopeful and/or peaceful.

Therefore, a simple mental health management tool is to ask yourself whether a thought is helpful or not helpful, rather than right or wrong.

If the thought is not helpful, then declare it as  unhelpful, take a deep breath, and replace it with a thought that is helpful or an action that is helpful.

Take care of yourself.
