A couple of us old folks were talking about the kinds of workshops we could put on for young people entering the job market today.
I mentioned that what I thought would be most helpful was to talk about the reality of the day to day, year to year demands of going to work. You know, what happens over the course of a career.
One of us strongly dismissed that idea. Continue reading →

The next number of weeks will be dedicated to home renovations so the blogging might get a bit “hit and miss”.
In the meantime, here are some thoughts:
If Economics is a social science, then Economic Statistics need to show relevant social impact data. I don’t think that the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) measure does this very well.
How about we ask Economists to provide a GGP – Gross Garbage Product measure? How much of a country’s “wealth” is turning up in landfill sites where it is assumed to no longer be the “wealth” that it was in the past? Maybe we could subtract the GGP from the GDP to get a more useful measure.
How about a GRR – a Gross Relevance Rate? This would measure how much people think they really have a meaningful impact on economic decision-making?
How about GAR – Gross Anxiety Rate? This would measure such things as the impact of travelling an hour or so a day in all kinds of weather on super highways while being deeply in debt and feeling extreme time pressure.

The way our democracy is currently working, the only way for me to get an honest appraisal of the candidates’ ability to represent me is to interview each candidate myself and actually get them to answer my questions.
They’re not going to do this!

Do you want better candidate choices in an election? Then use KSEA.
The first qualification needed in a candidate seeking to be your representative is a broad knowledge of people and systems. The candidate needs to demonstrate that they understand how society, democracy and working with others works.
Next they need to show skills in working with others, particularly listening skills. They also need to demonstrate research skills and communication skills.
Then they need to demonstrate experience both in life in general and in representing and advising others. Does the candidate really know how others experience life? Can they see past their own narrow preferences?
And finally, the candidate needs to be someone who wants to work things out? The candidate needs to be committed to democracy rather than the exercise of power.
Talk with your friends and others about KSEA. Start looking for and encouraging potential candidates between elections.
Better representative democracy is based on better representatives.
