Citizen K’s Democracy Project – “what I can tell you”
I can’t tell you what it feels like to live in constant fear of being beaten, imprisoned or lynched
I can’t tell you what it feels like to have survived a massacre that claimed so many of your people
I can’t tell you what it feels like to be pushed and pushed in hopes that you will finally resist and therefore justify someone killing you
I can’t tell you what it feels like to cower at night listening for the rushing feet that foreshadows the burning torch or the angry mob
I can’t tell you what it feels like to live your whole life knowing that you will likely be beaten and raped
I can’t tell you what it feels like to be despised because you don’t fit someone’s narrow definition of what they think is God’s blueprint for humanity
There is quite a bit I can’t tell you because I have not had to experience this.
If that is privilege, then so be it.
What I can tell you is that my ancestors went through all of this and countless gave their lives in the fight against it.
I owe it to them to speak out against any of this happening to anyone ever again.
